MAY SPOTLIGHT
HBO’s Rooster Is Something to Crow About

HBO’s newest comedy series, Rooster follows author Greg Russo (Steve Carell) as he arrives at Ludlow College to support his daughter Katie (Charly Clive), an art history professor navigating a messy marital breakdown with her fellow academic husband Archie (Phil Dunster).
Genuinely laugh-out-loud funny, what really makes the series work is the heart underneath all the chaos — very much in line with other shows from producer Bill Lawrence like Ted Lasso and Shrinking. At its core, Rooster is about Greg’s instinct to constantly step in and protect his daughter while navigating emotions around his own failed marriage.
The series is expertly written and impeccably cast with every supporting character feeling fully realized, from John C. McGinley as the wellness-obsessed college president to Connie Britton, who appears later in the season as Greg’s ex-wife and Katie’s deeply narcissistic mother. And then there’s Phil Dunster, who continues his streak of flawlessly portraying emotionally immature, deeply self-absorbed, yet charismatic men in his role as Archie.
What ultimately makes Rooster stand out is how different it feels from almost everything else in the comedy space right now. It’s sharp without trying too hard, emotional without being cheesy, and truly funny in a way that’s increasingly rare. HBO renewed the series shortly after its April premiere, so we likely won’t have to wait too long before returning to Ludlow College.
